For thousands of years, people have used colored stones as talismans and amulets. Certain stones were thought to help predict the future, used for protection and to inspire desired qualities. In the 18th century specific gemstones were used as birth amulets. It became the fashion to wear only the stone associated with one’s birth month. And that wearing ones birthstone would protect and bring happiness and luck to the wearer. Another tradition that has gained popularity is to wear the birthstones of loved ones like your sweetheart, spouse or children.
The Birthstone for December is Turquoise but Larimar and Blue Zircon can also be used. Turquoise is associated with the Earth itself, and stability and can be found around the world: Russia, Australia, Tibet, Chile, Mexico and the U.S.A., with certain color variations concentrated in certain countries. It is said that Turquoise stabilizes the body, emotions and spirit, providing better health, longevity and happiness. Legend says that the stone will change color when it’s wearer’s health is in danger. The name “Turquoise” is French for “Turkish”, because Turquoise first came to Europe from the Middle east via Turkish traders.

The Birthstone for January but Rose Quartz is also used. The most common hues of garnet are deep wine reds of North America but Garnets also appear in other colors with origins from Asian, Germany, Bovaria, Sri Lanka and Kenya. The garnet is known as the “Stone of Commitment”, often exchanged between romantic partners who will be absent or traveling. This tradition is derived from the Greek myth of Persephone, Goddess of Spring and her return to Hades. Garnet is also said to increase one’s energy and promote health.
